Farage‘s Brexit Party is working on Boris election pact – but with one important condition

There have been fears from some Eurosceptics that the Brexit Party could split the Brexit vote in some Conservative constituencies, leading potentially to a Labour-run Government. In recent days, Mr Farage has denied a pact could be arranged unless Mr Johnson abandons his EU exit deal. But now, the former Ukip donor Mr Banks has revealed exactly what Mr Farage is considering.

Mr Banks argues that Mr Farage will stand candidates down – on the condition realistic changes are made to Mr Johnson’s Brexit deal.

He told the Daily Mail: “A compromise has been proposed which would see Nigel ordering those of his candidates who simply cannot win to stand aside – but only on condition that various entirely realistic changes are made to the deal which Boris negotiated with Brussels.

“It is time for Nigel and his supporters to be realistic.

“If he ploughs ahead and refuses to stand down his party’s candidates – the ones who stand no chance at all of winning – then he will help Corbyn form the next Government.

“If Brexit is lost because the vote is split, then Nigel will have destroyed what he has spent years working to achieve.”

On Saturday, Mr Farage told the Daily Mail that he was “not directly involved” in the cross-party talks.

However, he did say that “the clock was ticking down” as Thursday’s deadline for nominations approaches.

He added: “I’m not asking for much.”

Mr Banks concluded: “We must all remember this: it is better to continue fighting for the right type of Brexit from the Government benches than to open the door of No 10 to a Marxist rabble hellbent on staying in the EU.

“That is a prospect that should clear minds and cool egos.”

It comes as some Brexit Party candidates have stood themselves down from the election in marginal Conservative seats.

Peter Udale made the announcement earlier this week by echoing comments surrounding the prospect of a Jeremy Corbyn-led Government.

Speaking to us , Mr Udale explained the danger posed by a Labour Government.

He said: “If he (Jeremy Corbyn) got into No10 he would undermine our economy, our defence and our union.

“I therefore believe it is fundamentally wrong for the Brexit Party, which is strongly patriotic and has a deep allegiance to our union, to stand candidates in constituencies where the Tories have a chance of winning.”

Mr Udale stressed however that he wasn’t turning his back on the Brexit Party and still believed the Party had an important role in the upcoming election.

He added: “I continue to support the Brexit Party in strong Labour constituencies where Leavers are unlikely to swing behind the Tories in large numbers.

“These voters deserve an alternative voice, and I believe the Brexit Party has some great candidates and will win seats.”

The election is set for December 12.

Mr Johnson claims Brexit can be concluded in 2020 if he wins the upcoming poll.
